What Coat?: The Difference of Base Coat, Top Coat and Clear Nail Polish
September 02, 2013A few lucky people get to see what my nail polish/nail care collection looks like in real life. If I get a request to blog about it, then I will. But since it would be too much in one blog entry, for now I will be focusing on what is a 'base coat', 'top coat' and 'clear nail polish'.
Let's just jump into it, shall we?
BASE COAT
A base coat is a clear polish that is applied as a 'base' for your nail color. It usually has vitamins infused to make your nails stronger. If you are the type that just feels restless without any nail polish on your nails (like me), then having a base coat before applying your nail color is essential to prevent the nail from turning yellowish.
TOP COAT
A top coat is applied last to protect your nail color from scratching, peeling and chipping, after it dries. There are a lot of variations of top coat like a matte finish, a gel top coat, and the normal glossy ones. The top coat is most essential if you are into nail art and you want to make your designs last for a long time.
CLEAR NAIL POLISH
Clear nail polish is like your favorite nail polish color, its just that... it has no color. So, you could reckon that this type of polish is prone to chipping and peeling.

- Base Coat - add a layer of base coat first then wait for it to completely dry. (This will only take a while because most of the base coats I've used dry pretty easily.
- Nail Polish- apply the nail color of your choice. I personally recommend, 1-2 layers of the polish. But remember to let each layer to dry to refrain from scratches and clumping.
- Top Coat- add a top coat when the nail color is completely dry. This will make the design/color last longer.
