Matted Nails: How To and the Difference Top Coat and Matte Nail Polishes

August 28, 2013

The conventional nail 'art' style was always shiny. But then recently, brands like Etude House, Bobbie, OMG, China Glaze, O.P.I., and Flormar released these MATTE TOP COAT, which you apply after the color of your choice.

Then again, there are nail polishes available in the market which are already tinted then after application turns matted. So, which one should you buy? The Matted Top Coat or the nail polish that has a 'mattifying' agent.

Personally, I bought the Matte Top Coat from Etude House (which was around 300PHP) and as I was doing my nails, let me take you through how this is used.

  • Make sure that your nails are clean from the previous nail polish used.

  • Add a base coat of your choice. This is to protect your nails from discoloration and so that the nail polish that you apply will adhere to your nail better. This is what I used.
CHIC: Base Coat. Price: 32.75.
Available at any drug store and department store nationwide
  • Then add the nail color of your choice. In this case, I used the Black nail polish. Make sure that the nail polish is totally dried before doing the next step.

THE FACE SHOP: Black Nail Polish. Price: 95PHP
  • Add the Matte Top Coat, 1 thick layer should be enough. Spread this evenly throughout the nail.
ETUDE HOUSE: Help My Finger (Matte Top Coat). Price: 295PHP
  • Make sure that the top coat is thoroughly dried before doing anything! The end result is this! :)

AMAZING HUH?

So, Okay. Let's discuss the difference between the Matte Top Coat and the Matte Nail Polish.

For Matte Top Coats:
  • Perfect for people who have a large collection of nail polishes (like me)- This is to lessen the expenses in buying the same polish color just in the matte effect.
  • More layers: In this case I had around 4 layers on my nails (1 layer of base coat, 2 coats of black nail polish, 1 layer of the matte top coat)
For Matte Nail Polishes:
  • If you want one color in a matte effect
  • You don't have a vast collection of nail polishes. (Like, having 5 colors is enough for you)
  • Less layers: If this would be applied, you would have around 2-3 layers (1 layer of base coat, 1 or 2 layers of the matte nail polish)
So, this is pretty much your choice. But having a matte effect on the nails is an amazing change from the norm.
